History

The first Gurdwara was set up in a hired Catholic Church on Hills Terrace in Chatham by the first generation of Sikhs in the early 1960s. As the community continued to grow, alternative premises were found and by the late 60s the Gurdwara was re-located to the Kings Church on New Road.

The Sikh community of the first generation rapidly began to grow and become established. The Sikh Sangat of the Medway Towns took a huge step forward in the early 1970s by purchasing their first premises for a Gurdwara on Cossack Street in Rochester.

For over 40 years, the community worshipped at Cossack Street Gurdwara. However, once again the premises were struggling to cater for the growing Sikh community and in addition were in dire need of major refurbishment.

With support and donations from the local and wider Sikh community, new premises were purchased at Lankester Parker Road. These business premises were refurbished and on 9th April 2011, the Nishan Sahib was erected and the Medway Towns Gurdwara Sabha was officially opened.

On 10th April 2011, the proud Sangat of the Medway Towns, in the form of Nagar Kirtan transferred from Cossack Street to the Medway Towns Gurdwara Sabha.
