The most fundamental component of Indian music is Raag. Raag is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘’rang ‘’ meaning ‘’to colour ‘’. There are various raag for expressing various moods and a system of raag forms the basis of all Indian music to some extent or another.

In Gurmat Sangeet, raag plays an extremely important role. It has its own distinctive nature and gives each shabad a definitive mood. Shabads in the Guru Granth Sahib have also been rendered in raags ( 31 raags) derived from rural folk traditions such as Ghoreean, Suhag and Alohnian.

The harmonium is an instrument that has its origins in the period of British rule in India. It is a modified version of the reed organ, with keys like the piano and bellows to pump air into the instrument. It is a relatively small compact instrument and used extensively during Kirtan. To learn to play the harmonium you need to get to know the different keys and get your ears acquainted with them.

The Medway Towns Gurudwara Sabha hosts Kirtan/Harmonium classes which are delivered by an external qualified musician Ms Rajwant Kaur who holds a masters degree in Vocals.

Kirtan/Harmonium classes are available every Saturday afternoon from 13.00-15.00 and are open to all ages.
