Teacher: Harkiret Singh Bahra (BMus Performance/Composition)

The Tabla is an extremely versatile North Indian Classical Percussion instrument. It is performed with the hands and consists of a bass (bayan) and treble (dayan) drum. There are different styles/gharanas of Tabla playing which are: Delhi, Lucknow, Panjab, Ajrara, Benares and Farrukhabad. Traditionally Tabla Maestros studied only one gharana whilst in modern times, it has become more acceptable to study many. Harkiret Singh originally learnt from Giani Gian Singh Surjit and Giani Gurbachan Singh Hamdardh in Gravesend and began teaching their class when they became too elderly. He now is a Senior Disciple of Ustad Harkirat Singh Rayatt and was also under the guidance of the Late Pandit Shankar Ghosh.

With ever-increasing knowledge of solo playing and accompaniment, Harkiret brings influence from the Panjab, Benares and Farrukhabad Gharana of Tabla (and Jori – Sikh Percussion) into his teaching.

Main class aims are establishing and developing a proficient technique in playing in order to ultimately perform on stage (Gurmat Sangeet and with other genres of music). Harkiret brings his in-depth knowledge and experience of Gurmat Sangeet in order to best prepare students in the extremely challenging art of Tabla accompaniment.

The Class students have regular accompaniment opportunities and are extremely lucky to have the support of the Resident Gianis since the students accompany them on stage once every couple of months during the evening Darbar Programme, and at other Gurudwaras.

Please contact Harkiret Singh for class fees/enrolment on 07921 706 003 and/or contact the Gurudwara.
